The 10,000 Islands Ecology & Beach Seine Tour is the premier learning experience in the Everglades area and is superb for the entire family – from the toddlers to the grandparents. Limited to just six guests, it is a personalized, hands-on eco-adventure. With your licensed US Coast Guard Captain and Florida Master Naturalist Guide, you will leave Marco Island/Goodland’s Calusa Island Marina in a very comfortable power boat that will take you through the mangrove estuary of Rookery Bay’s 10,000 Islands. In the power boat, we will conduct a macro tour about the area as a whole – its ecosystems, heritage and culture. You may encounter manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, bald eagles, ospreys, herons, egrets, pelicans, alligators, roseate spoonbills and/or numerous species of fish and shore birds. Once we reach a remote barrier island destination, you will leave the power boat for a hands-on experience in the island’s intertidal zone. With your assistance, we use supple seine nets to temporarily and humanely capture samples of the wonderfully diverse critters that call this zone home. Magnifying viewing devices are used to view, examine and identify the various species before they are carefully released. For parents and grandparents wanting an active role as educators with their kids, our naturalists guides will facilitate the experience and help you be the instructor. This tour was developed from our experiential student courses for high schools and colleges, as well as, our work with home school groups. This is a learning adventure for the entire family.
